Fire & EMS Lieutenant Job Opening

The City of Altoona is accepting applications for the position of Fire & EMS Lieutenant.

Requirement include: 8 years fire, EMS or rescue fields and 5 years of documented supervisory business. You must have: Fire Instructor, Fire Fighter I and II, Fire Officer, Pumper/Engine Operator, Haz-mat Operations, FEMA IS-100, IS-200, IS-300, IS-400 and IS-800. You must be able to obtain a Class ‘B' Commercial Drivers License with air-brakes and tanker endorsement within 1 month of employment. You must live within a 30 minutes response time to the Altoona Fire Station.  Associate degree is preferred. Salary range $60,772.42 to $79,772.42.

CITY BRUSH DROP OFF

The entrance to the City of Altoona brush pile has moved.  Residents wishing to deposit brush can enter through the gate north of the Altoona Aquatics Park and south of the Altoona Skate Park.  Altoona Aquatics Park is located at 1200 Venbury Drive. 

Please have information identifying you as a City of Altoona resident ready when you drop off brush.  The brush pile is open from 8:00am – 12:00pm on the following dates:

Saturday, July 6

Saturday, August 3

Saturday, September 7

Saturday, October 5

Altoona Kicks off Naming and Logo Design for New Community Health Initiative

The City of Altoona, community leaders and residents are putting together a structure to support an ongoing community health initiative.  “This will be a public-private sector partnership which aims to set the bar for a thriving community that promotes and supports healthy lifestyles.  We want residents to be involved with this new initiative from its inception so we are inviting Altoona residents to submit a name for the community health initiative and/or a logo design”, said Skip Conkling, Altoona Mayor.

The winning name and winning logo will be the official name and logo appearing on all branding material such as  social media, website and all other materials.

Contest Rules:

1.      All names and logo design entries must be submitted by May 15, 2013.

2.      Submissions can include both a name and logo design or just a name or logo.

3.      Contest is open to everyone 15 years and older who works or resides in Altoona.

4.      Only one (1) entry per person will be considered.

5.       Naming and logo themes should encompass a healthy, livable and thriving community.

6.      A brief statement should be included with your name and/or logo design that includes your thoughts behind the design, your name, address, email address, and phone number.  If you do not reside in Altoona but work in Altoona, please include the name of your company.  All personal information will be confidential except as described in the Publicity paragraph below.

7.      Name and/or logo submissions can be sent to altoonacontest@outlook.com or delivered to City of Altoona - City Hall 407 8th Street SE Altoona, IA 50009. Note: Please include Logo Contest in the email subject line and/or on the second line of the envelope address.

8.      The Health Initiative Committee will select winners and announce no later than June 10, 2013.

Note:  These are only ideas to help jumpstart your thinking

Judging:

Members of the Community Health Initiative Implementation Leadership Committee will act as judges and will determine the winner based on the following elements: 1) commendable connection of name and/or logo to a community health theme; 2) originality; 3) uniqueness; 4) practicality and 5) effectiveness. All judge's decisions are final and will be announced no later than June 10, 2013.

The winner will receive a gift basket with Altoona goodies.

Publicity

The committee reserves the right to make public contest winners' name and photographic image for promotional purposes through a variety of public mediums including local newspaper, website, and other social mediums.

These events are great opportunities for those who have subsequently accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of those medications.

Medicap will be donating $3.00 to Southeast Polk School District for every pound of medication brought in.  Please contact Nicolle McClure with Medicap at 515-440-1270 for the April 20^th event. 

You can bring your expired or unused drugs, needles, sharps, etc. to the Fire Department to be disposed of properly and safely.  Please contact Jerry Whetstone at 515-967-2216 for the April 27^th event.
